Generation P, the title Pei Li chose for this exhibition, is expressive of a general attitude amongst her generation, but that is also specific to her experience, too. Initially, “P” was for Pei Li, but also because pei sounds close to pain in English. Like many of her generation, Pei Li is comfortable thinking in English. But that was more specific than intended. ‘I feel pain, a little strange,’ she explained, ‘because I always want to be fun. There is no pain for me. “P” can mean a lot of things pain punk paranoia peili photoshop pink perfect puberty prime pay perhaps play …’
She describes the sum of the works she intended for Generation P as presenting the perfect distortion of the age in which she lives—she means that psychologically as well as physically, which she demonstrated in the works she produced.
