Jia Aili(b.1 979)accepted strict training in classical painting at Luxun Academy of Fine ArtS, he was influenced by Michelangelo Buonarroti and Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio,employed the ancient transparent painting technique,and emphasized the deep perspective of the picture plane and the treatment Of the changes of light,shadow,shape and space in a figurative and realistic way. In the pictures of representative work series“ Crazy View” between 2006 and 2007,there are masked depressed person,empty wasteland,gigantic industrial ruins,blasting off rocket,the confrontation between a naked person and machine...a series of scene full of individual metaphors of post—industrial age and dramatic tensions.But at the same time Jia Aili could also broke through the material planarity of painting(painting installation),made the whole space in which the picture was placed an extension of the idea in creation,and with schizophrenia—like passion,painted lines seemed to be overflowing the picture and stretching and splashing in every dimension,which also became his distinguishable but irreplaceable artistic character.
The theme of the exhibition of Jia Aili this time is About a Teenager Hero,which is constituted by several parts:two paintings created between 2006 and 2007,four videos,and other parts that were packed in his studio in Beijing and then carried to New York,including a bookcase full of small materials and sundries,a plaster mold of hand for the reproduction of sculptures,several bundles of flax canvas(and an audio file of a teenager next door blowing trumpet).
Teenager Hero is a historical topic that the young people growing up in 1990s are familiar with and heroes and tragedies are linked together, while the power of example is infinite. When the story of the teenager hero,as a propaganda template,spread throughout the country, nobody has ever questioned over whether he really existed。As the former prop of political education.now the real image of the teenager is too far away to figure out,together with vanished the glorious pure and firm conviction of “working and fighting all my life for the cause of socialism”of this generation,and the spirit of self—sacrifice also turned into ashes in the time of capita above all.
The wax figure of a masked teenager with red scarf is an occasional outcome of an attempt。The most common white wax is translucent,solid,elastic,combustible,meltable,deformable,and volatile,When the wax figure is placed on the nearly two—meter—high pedestal,the character of the wax and the sense of disillusion of the teenager hero fuse into a pure and ephemeral tragic scene.As a concept of ready made article,the plaster mold is put together with the blue bookcase full of materials and objects related to painting,which is a partial reappearance of the reality of artist.Another installation put  in the center is constituted by an erected roll of canvas,with two little speakers sticking out of the lower end,giving out a alternately  intermittent and bright sound of trumpet reverberating in the space,just like the teenager hero stood on the highland looking to the further world In the distance.
Like a scenery.history is tridimensional with complicated and nebulous tiers.When the statue of the former spiritual leader falls apart,it is hard to reappear the complex feelings with the techniques of dabbing and splashing.In Untitled(1 66x310 cm,oil on canvas,mixed material,2007),Jia Aili used shells,plaster, branch,soil,mirror as mixed materials,and amended,supplemented,transmitted,and described the subject of “the pain of history” with their complex physical texture and spirituality.In Untitled(200x300cm,Oil on canvas,2007),however,there was a religion-like absoluteness,pointing to the spiritual ego of the artist.
Abreast with the works above,are four single—channel videos on painting by the artist,which decomposed the deity in painting and the divergence of thinking from the perspective of documents.
After 2008.the subjects that Jia Aili focused on are more extroversive and wider, from history, culture.science and technology, disease,war and so on of the society, the tragedy and disharmony between human and nature,between human and society caused by the human factors,to the anger and helplessness for the lost of Utopia.all kind of costs of the shortcomings of the industrial civilization paid by human,and the thoughts of death Of life and spirit.As an artist,he creates art works based on the alienation defined by the human instinctive perception,and re-comments the history in the contemporary environment.Unlike the illusion and plainness that one could easily fall into while reflecting the complexity of the modern spirit,the look of Jia Aili’s creation that keeps changing wanders between abstract and concretization.Mr.Yang(200x200cm, oil on canvas,2009)and Mickey's Redemption(200x267cm,oil on canvas,2009)combine the high level art of modernism and the low level art of popular culture,in a non—idealistic way.rectify the artists’worry of horror, as well as the feel of being out of time or unable to adapt to the environment,bring back profound but instinctive perception along the historical path.
Having taken part in the creation of a giant mural in his early years,Jia Aili’s control of works with large size is amazing,but there follows the question of noumenon of painting.and the history of a painting is a revolution in which the artist combines the time and space,and fuses thinking and action.The huge oil painting We come from the century(600x300cmx5,Oil on canvas,2008—2010 spent nearly three years.With disintegration of the grand narrative,as a text of the time.“Non—Objective Painting”is an outcome of the encounters between memory,history,present and future,and the creative process of this work is a torturing question of how to art for art’s sake by the artist himself nowadays when the civilization is lost.
